스웨덴 국립문서고에 이메일을 보내다

평일에는 노트북을 거의 켜지 않는데 오늘은 예외. 스웨덴 국립문서고에 문의메일을 보냈다. 

To whom it may concern, 

Good day. This is *** from Seoul, Korea. I am visiting Stockholm from June 4 to 7 on a personal trip. Among my plan is to visit Swedish National Archive and browse certain data there. I wish you'd kindly help me figure out how I could get an access to them. 

I hope to see stuff gathered by Swedish explorers, diplomats and missionaries who were active in Central Asia during the 20th century. I heard Swedish National Archive hosts objects collected by Sven Hedin, Sigfrid Moen, Samuel Franne and Gustaf Rikard Raquette. 

Among them, especially, are photos of Xinjiang (East Turkestan) during the 20th century, which are hard to find elsewhere. I wish I could just go visit and take a look at them for several hours out of my pure interest in the field. 

My goal of this trip to Sweden in the first place is to trace the footsteps of prominent Swedish explorers who expanded the horizon of Central Asian geography. It will be very gracious of you to open up the window to the archive a little for me. 

Below are my questions:

1. How can I qualify myself to get an access to the data I want? 

2. Is there any separate catalog I can refer to?

김호동 교수가 쓴 '군나르 야링 컬렉션의 중앙아시아 문헌자료'라는 글을 읽고서 이 메일을 썼다. 국립문서고 같은 끗발있는 곳이 나 같은 일개 아마추어 여행자를 들여보내 줄지는 의문이지만 밑져야 본전. 답장을 기다린다. 

군나르 야링은 스웨덴 태생의 투르크학 학자이자 외교관이었다. 1907년부터 2002년까지 오래도 살았고 UN 총장까지 할 뻔 했다. 이 분이 신장에서 모아온 고문헌이 스웨덴 룬드대학의 군나르 야링 컬렉션이 되었고, 이 분야에서 세계 3대 컬렉션에 꼽힌다. 책등이라도 구경하고 싶지만 안타깝게도 룬드대학은 스톡홀름에서 멀다.

대신 김호동 교수의 글에서 새로운 정보를 얻었으니까 한번 문을 두드려 보기로 했다. 스웨덴 국립문서고에 20세기 초 선교사들이 신장에서 찍은 사진이 수천 장이나 있다고 한다. 어렴풋이 조사한 바로는 스벤 헤딘이 그린 지도들도 아마 이곳이나 그 산하기관에 일부 소장돼 있다. 크게 기대하지는 않지만 메일 답장이 긍정적이면 좋겠다. Samuel Franne, Gustaf Raquette, Sigfrid Moen 같은 새로운 이름도 알게 되었으니 메모.
